Hearthstone phone versions delayed until 2015

The mobile version of Hearthstone has been delayed Blizzard have announced today.

The PC and iPad versions are long since out and the game has already surpassed 20 million players worldwide, but Blizzard have said that they will need more time to adapt the game to work properly on the smaller mobile screens, even though the Android tablet version should still release at the end of the year.

“We’re… close to having Hearthstone out to our iPhone and Android phone users, but it’s become clear that we need a little more time to get that version right. While we have a build up and running internally, it needs a bit more work, and we don’t feel like we’ll be ready to share it with you until early next year.”

It seems that the problem is that because a maximum of 14 cards can be on the playing field at a time, keeping the text on the cards legible on a small screen has thrown a minor spanner into the works. A straight port would just have the text much too small to be read and Blizzard want to make sure the user interface is as good as the other versions before they release the game on Android phones and iOS.

“Releasing Hearthstone on iPhone and Android phones is something we’re incredibly excited about, but ultimately we’d rather take the extra time to make Hearthstone’s user interface on the phone customized to feel great for the platform, rather than a port that doesn’t take into account the limitations of a smaller screen.”
