Breakaway Alpha Impressions

ann-bonny

Amazon Game Studios announced earlier this year that they were launching a new mythical sports themed action MOBA style experience known as Breakaway. Fast forward a few months, and the Alpha for the game has just ended. I had a chance to put in quite a bit of time with the game, and my first impressions were positive. Being an alpha, there were of course performance and matchmaking problems. Lonesamurai for example, was never able to even play the game, an issue we still haven’t found the root case of. That being said, the game looks promising, and we’ve put together a little video detailing the game, it’s positives and negatives for you.

Smite Gives You Triple Everything Then 7 More Days of Stuff!

smite-triple

Fans of HiRez Studio’s 3rd person action MOBA SMITE will know that the developer loves to runs sales, in game events and generally just throw things at players. This is partly due to the fact that they want you to spend money on skins. But, when the skins are as generally high quality as the ones HiRez turns out, you can’t really blame them. With the holidays here, HiRez is ratcheting up the in-game goodies even more.  From Saturday Dec 17th at 5 a.m. EST until Tuesday, December 20th at 5 a.m. EST players can earn triple worshippers, experience and favor in SMITE. This makes the weekend the perfect time to work on your mastery levels with Nike and that pesky Fafnir.

And if that wasn’t enough for you, once Triple Everything Weekend ends on the 20th, the 7 Days of Saturnalia Event will begin. Similar to Triple Everything Weekend, thjis second event will offer Double Everything as well as free gems for completing quests themed around the in game pantheons. From HiRez themselves:

smite-7-days

Beginning Tuesday, December 20th until Monday, December 26th, join in the 7 Days of Saturnalia once again! Indulge in free Gems, Pantheon Chest Sales, and double Experience/Worshipers all week long.

Each day, there will be a new Pantheon specific Quest players can participate in that will yield 25 Gems upon completion. That means you can earn up to 175 Gems during Saturnalia! Each Pantheon Quest and Pantheon Chest will be available for 2 days.

Kudos to HiRez for giving players a full ten days of Christmas gifts, especially those who might still be trying to earn some gems and finish off those Odyssey purchases in order to get that sick Anubis Tier 5 skin. Go log in and own some people on the Battleground of the Gods people, HiRez is literally throwing gems at you to do so!

Silenced HotS player makes death threats; faces 5 years jail

It seems that people never learn. Commonplace is the death threat online (sadly), but one gamer who made such threats to Blizzard has found himself facing five years in prison for it.

Stephen Cebula, 28, was a player in the Silver bracket of Heroes of the Storm’s ranked ladder system who unfortunately became known for his aggressive harassment of other players. Sending several message’s worth of things such as racial epithets and threats to “bomb the new york twin towers”. Not surprisingly he was reported to Blizz who quickly silenced Cebula to stop his hateful messaging habits. To say Cebula did not take this well would be an understatement.

Sending messages through Facebook, one such message from Cebula’s Facebook threatened the company’s California headquarters saying “You keep silencing me in Heroes of the Storm and I may or may not pay you a visit with an AK 47 amongst some other ‘fun’ tools.”

The messages were reported to the feds and Cebula was arrested after the FBI found several other social media accounts in his control that concerned them, including one apparently named “tedbundyismygod1” – referring to one of America’s most notorious serial killers.

According to court documents from the trial Cebula had admitted that he made the message with the intent to “scare those whom he had threatened”. He is now being held without bail due to having been judged to have ‘significant’ mental issues by the state. Cebula had previously faced psychiatric evaluation before in March of last year when he confessed to Sacramento Sherriff’s Department that had had intentions to kill someone at a local park.

His plea is expected to be entered on the 26th of the month, and right now he is facing a maximum of five years imprisonment and a $250,000 fine.

Just a lesson for you. Death threats – they’re not funny or cool. Don’t make ’em.
