Bandai kicked off their show at Gamescom 2016 on Twitch with a trailer for an interesting looking new title called Little Nightmares, due out in Spring 2017.
With the tagline “Play With Your Childhood Fears” and a very creepy aesthetic, it definitely stood out. The animation looks to be stop motion. Described by the producers as a suspense exploration title it features a small girl as a protagonist who has to be smart and sneak around any enemies she encounters. The gameplay demo showed her using a lighter to light her way, using noises to distract enemies, climbing on the environment and throwing a clay pot down on a chef who was trying to grab her. One disturbing sequence also required you to grind some type of meat in a sausage grinder to create a dangling rope of meat to swing across a gap. Little Nightmares seems interesting and atmospheric from the small amount that was shown.
The next game up was Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2. Immediately notable in the game were Dragon Ball GT characters, with the developers confirming that the game would be focused on Dragon Ball Z along with characters from all the movies and GT. Changes from Xenoverse to Xenoverse 2 include a 60FPS framerate and improved online play. The game looked very similar to the first Xenoverse, but combat appeared to be much faster and more fluid. Targeting and rushing have been improved, along with a new dash mechanic to help you close with enemies. There are also more quests to do online, along with a bigger hub city. The game will also be incorporating the Dragon Ball Super story to a certain extent, although the developers stated it was hard to include because the game has been in development for some time and Dragon Ball Super is rather new. However, they do plan on trying to include it.
The developers spoke repeatedly about taking community feedback, as well as continuing to support the new game after launch. It seems that Bandai is determined to make everything about Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 bigger and better. As a fan of the original, I’m excited to get some playtime with the new one. Xenoverse 2 should be available October 16 of this year.
Bandai followed up Xenoverse 2 with another fighting game, this one arguably one of the flagship titles of the genre: Tekken 7. The game is meant to give players some idea as to why the ongoing fight between the families in the game, as well as the Devil Gene, have been happening for the last 20 years. Tekken 7 has been created on the Unreal Engine 4, which allowed Bandai to bring a new level of detail to the game. It was also revealed that Akuma was built in the game with no input from Capcom. Instead Bandai studied his moves and have build him to work in their 3d engine.
There are also new characters coming to the game as well as characters returning from past titles that haven’t been seen in some time, with this game having the most new characters to date. Some characters also have some unique mechanics a la Akuma. One such was the rage art, which is a character specific command that does massive damage, and also has armor on startup to make it harder to interrupt. These moves are flashy and powerful and are meant to finish opponents.
Tekken 7 will be released in early 2017 on Xbox One, PS4 and PC.
Tinybuild has had a large presence distributing indie games, as well as publishing their own games. Their time today at Gamescom 2016 was spent showing off a number of things.
First up was Clustertruck, a runner type game where you “jump on trucks and stay on trucks”. Various abilities are also available, including a grapple and teleport. Massive crashes and mayhem were also shown off. The game looked frantic as even the devs struggled to cross the finish line a few times using the double jump, jetpack and other items. It was fast paced and looked to be an interesting, and as a plus….it had lasers and a mode called “epic mode” which gives the screen black bars and epic music. For a small studio- Landfall Games only has 4 memebers- Clustertruck certainly looks impressive. Fans of creating their own levels will also be pleased to know the game has a level editor. According to the developers, Clustertruck will be released sometime in September.
*Landfall is also the studio working on Totally Accurate Battle Simulator, which was only shown briefly, but looks hilarious with googly eyed soldiers fighting it out.
Frontier, creators of popular space ship sim Elite Dangerous have been working on their theme park builder game Planet Coaster for a bit now, and they have announced that the game will be removed from their own store and moved onto Steam for pre-orders as soon as they update the game to the next Alpha stage.
Alpha 3 will be released on August 23rd onto Steam and the early access alpha pass which has been available for purchase through Frontier’s store will be removed a few days later on the 25th. It will instead be replaced with two pre-order options on Steam, meaning that if you want early access you will lose your chance very soon.
If you do want to pre-order though, the standard edition of the game will be available for £26.99/€33.99/$40.99, while the Thrillseeker Edition will contain the game, a golden hat and King Coaster mascot for your in-game avatar, a digital sketchbook and the game’s soundtrack for £29.99/€37.99/$44.99 which isn’t really that much more for a special edition of a game. It will also grant you access to the beta, which is really good.
If you do already have the early access pass, you’ll need a Steam account to continue to play and more information can be found at the FAQ.

Its been a strong year for Warhammer games (mostly), and another interesting entry in the universe is set to drop in November. Warhammer 40,000: Sanctus Reach puts you in the shoes the Space Wolves as you seek to defend the last bastion of humanity in the Sanctus Reach system against the ork Grukk Face-Rippa and his Red Waaagh! (That may be in contention for one of the strangest sentences I’ve ever written.)
The game from Straylight Entertainment and published by Slitherine Ltd is billed as a 3d turnbased strategy game. The developer promises that it will have two “uncompromising and long story-driven campaigns: Stormclaw and Hour of the Wolf with several dozen differnt units to command. It will include unit level ups, terrain that affects tactics and different abilities for units.
The game strongly resembles hand painted models of the real board game, and as I write this Lonesamurai is frothing at the mouth trying to get a code for the game.
