Team Fortress 2 Goes Free to Play

Valve's online shooter now supported through microtransactions.

US, June 23, 2011

Valve today revealed its successful online shooter Team Fortress 2 has gone Free to Play for PC and Mac players through Steam.

This announcement is part of the game's "Uber Update" that went live today. Team Fortress 2 will now be supported through microtransactions. As detailed in the official FAQ, those who've spent any money on the game already have a premium account and will received a special Proof of Purchase hat to wear on any character in-game.

Team Fortress 2 was first available as part of Valve's Orange Box package released in 2007.

And within 24 hours of this news going public, reportedly 20,000 new users downloaded and played Team Fortress 2 for the first time, and it became the first game ever to temporarily dethrone Counter-Strike as the most popular game on Steam.

Now people are asking the simple question: Can this be kept up?
