Mighty No.9’s New Trailer’s Voiceover Is Cringeworthy At Best

Mighty No.9 Logo

Okay, as much as I am a fan of Mega Man games, when it comes to Keiji Inafune’s spiritual successor, Mighty No. 9 – a game that I was super-hyped about when it was first announced, and was devastated its Kickstarter was at a time I was financially unstable – in more recent months, I have simply stopped caring.

When you look at the track record, it’s hard not to see why. The project has been delayed three separate times for varying periods of length, which have led to its launch being delayed by almost two years in total. For its promise that it would arrive on all “current and next-gen consoles and PC”, it has really missed the boat to be relevant on consoles such as PS3 or Wii any more; and with Nintendo’s NX expected next year, it’s also rather late even for the Wii U. The fact it finally even HAS a launch date (June 21st) is the only saving grace.

So, after the long wait, you’d think Deep Silver – the development team working on the game alongside Inafune’s company, Comcept – would at least have a clue how to market Mighty No. 9 properly, right?

Well, no. The latest trailer for the game, while visually impressive and packed with action, is embarrassing fans and non-fans alike for its cheesy voice-over. Not only does it refer to the game using the sort of lines that should have probably stayed in the 80s – “Do you like awesome things that are awesome?” as an example – but it even borders on offensive to both Mega Man fans and Anime addicts – anyone who thinks “and make the bad guys cry like an anime fan on prom night” is a good line should be summarily fired. Unless you’re highly lactose-intolerant, take a look at the video below and make sure you keep the sound on:

Let’s be honest here. Mighty No. 9 is the kind of game that is most likely to appeal to people with a love of old-school platforming action games – I should know, I am one, and I still plan to get this game despite everything. Considering Keiji Inafune is well-known for such titles, Deep Silver should have been well-aware of this and marketed the game accordingly. Instead, they seem to be aiming for a ’90s Teenager vibe – excuse me while I look at a calendar. Keiji Inafune himself is already facing fan scepticism for his antics with the Kickstarter for another Comcept title, Red Ash, so this marketing disaster is unlikely to restore confidence in him or his company.

Mighty, for the love of god, please don’t suck.

Blizzard Comfirms Overwatch Microtransaction Prices

Overwatch Logo

Overwatch is live and Blizzard has revealed the prices for Loot Boxes—random assortments of skins, stencils and hero icons.

– 2 Loot Boxes: $1.99/£1.59
– 5 Loot Boxes: $4.99/£3.99
– 11 Loot Boxes: $9.99/£7.99
– 24 Loot Boxes: $19.99/£15.99
– 50 Loot Boxes: $39.99/£31.99

Overwatch Loot Box

I am a little surprised, but really I shouldn’t have been…

You can earn loot boxes just by playing the game, and it’s hard to imagine a snazzy loot box stencil giving anyone the edge in battle.

You can easily earn two in a 45 minute play session, which is a good hourly rate by all accounts.

What do you think? Let us know in the comments

Mobile Review: Ernie Vs. Evil! (iPhone version)

The town of Lawrston was once a peaceful place to live. Until the summoning tore it apart. Risen from the depths of the utmost evil the ancient celestial monster, Bob, has possessed the town. Using his new army, Bob, plans to turn all of humanity into his evil servants. All that stands between Bob and his plans is one man, cranky from a double shift and with no evening plans. That man is Ernie, the sales manager for Meat N’ Things.

As you can probably tell by the games intro, this is another in the long line of zombie games on the market, so what makes this different… Well, lets take a lookie shall we?

Ernie Vs. Evil is, at it’s core, a shooter defense game, in some ways similar to something like Plant’s Vs. Zombies (seeing a theme here), but in many important ways, VERY different!

Ernie vs Evil Gamplay

Goodnight Games (‘ello chaps, do you ever sleep?) have gone with simplisity in Ernie Vs Evil, that makes it the perfect game for a quick blast, OR a prolonged bathroom mobile phone game session… c’mon, this is where we really play mobile phone games, anyone who says they don’t, reads encyclopedias and won’t be reading this review anyway.

What stands out straight away is the control system, or as I found, the lack of one, this game is as simple as clicking on the screen to shoot and at the level you want to shoot at. All the while, various enemies come at you from three levels and in waves of difficulty.

One of the interesting touchs though is the weapon upgrade system, there are more upgrades than i thought there would be and you can get some really cool things going on during the frantic gameplay, plus being able to selct different load outs changes up how the game plays a little, not much, but as you can see in the pic below, it can get crazy.

Ernie vs Evil super weapon

The game looks gorgeous, as you can see in the trailer and screenshots, and the number of enemy types is incredibly good.  From cute little bats, to evil zombie cheer leaders that take far too many shots to kill (maybe the goodnight team had cheer leader issues in school, I hear thats a thing)

The levels are quick and can get very frantic, but you do feel like you are defending your base as they happen.

We had to borrow an iPhone to get this review done (tech issues and the Dragon was loathe to let me use hers), but we are still loving the game here at geek towers and would highly reccomend it!

A gnawingly good 8 out of 10! Would bite again!

Ernie Vs. Evil is available on iTunes and Google Play right now!

Sega Looking Into Shenmue 1 & 2 HD Editions!

Sega is teasing up a potential high definition remaster of both Shenmue and Shenmue II.

Shenmue II xbox cover

The news comes via a video of the unboxing of the “Europa Edition” of Valkyria Chronicles Remastered, from Sega Europe.

In the video, the publisher said there are various licensing issues involved with the original releases, and that despite this they would love to do it – they even said they are “currently investigating how to make it a reality.”

They also said the HD remasters would have to live up to the quality of the original releases.

The game’s final chapter, Shenmue III, was funded on Kickstarter under the leadership of series creator Yu Suzuki. It’s currently set for a release sometime later next year on PC and PlayStation 4, and is being developed by Ys Net.

Netflix Brings a Fan Favourite! VOLTRON!

I’ll be honest, I only recently got into Voltron and didn’t know much about it, but growing up I was a HUGE Transformers and Power Rangers fan, so Voltron should have been on my anime loving childhood…

However, Netflix has a new animated version coming and it looks Bad Ass!
