CCP close San Francisco Office

Creators of popular and long-running MMO EVE Online have closed yet another American office following on from the closure of their Atlanta office earlier this year. This time it’s the office in San Francisco as CCP move to “combine and simplify” their operations.

The closure also comes with the news that prominent employee David Reid who joined the company in 2012 to oversee the launch of Dust 514 has also been let go, along with CFO Joe Gallo who had worked at CCP for five.

The recent changes are meant to refocus efforts on back on EVE as a game and in the Reykjavik HQ, where Eve is developed. As of yet though the Eve Valkyrie team in Newcastle remains operational.

GOG changes: adds optional regional pricing and DRM-free movies

GOG’s had some pretty big changes made recently. No worries though, it’s all good.

The first of the big changes is one that was discussed earlier but then scrapped. Regional pricing means that customers in countries other than the USA can now see prices in currencies other than just American dollars. Currently Euros, Pounds Sterling, Australian Dollars and Russian Roubles are supported. The plan was previously scrapped because just as with Steam the prices in other currencies didn’t exactly match those ones in dollars, but GOG are now getting around this by making it an option to choose to pay in a currency other than dollars. They’ve made the prices more equal too, although where the publisher of the game follows a different regional pricing you’ll be able to get the difference refunded in store credit if you choose to pay with something other than dollars.

The other big change suggests that GOG are trying to beat Steam to the punch with their upcoming support for movies and televisual media. There are now 21 documentaries about gaming available for purchase on GOG, some free while others are currently discounted under a launch offer. There’s also plans to bring more to GOG but no one seems to want to be the first to try.

“DRM-Free distribution is not a concept their lawyers would accept without hesitation. We kind of felt that would be the case and that it’s gonna take patience and time to do it, to do it, to do it right.” said GOG

EVE Online’s wormholes get a rework in new mini-expansion

Seems that CCP think that wormholes in their game EVE Online have gotten too predictable, they’ve made some changes to how they work to put a little mystery back into a game that currently publishes guides on the best wormholes to live in.

The Hyperion update will open up new wormhole connections. The ones with black holes inside are now places for fast-skirmishes between ships and class 4 systems will gain an extra reliable exit point. The changes to calculations of mass on ships entering wormholes have also been changed and will result in bigger ships drifting further away from the hole’s entrance and safer grounds – hopefully resulting in more “exciting skirmishes”.

Another addition to the game sees the addition of ‘burner’ pirates – solo attackers that wait behind space gates to attack frigate-class ships that open them. CCP have apparently take inspiration from player encounters in adding these ships and programming their behaviour patterns.

Hyperion is the third mini-expansion released for EVE, in a change from the traditional large expansions that CCP used to bring around to the game a lot less often.

Orcs Must Die Unchained introduces new playable character

Orcs Must Die Unchained is currently in closed beta, which means that it’s getting some fairly regular and sizeable updates as a result. The latest one will introduce many new things, including a new playable character.

Known as Tundra the Polar Bear, he has the ability to ignore crowd control effects and can deal damage through ranged and melee attacks. He’s also wearing a lot more fur than just his natural white.

There will also be around 20 new trap cards added as part of the update and a few new items. On the side of the minions coming at you, there’s been the addition of captains – stronger than normal minions who spawn towards the higher wave levels and take more attacking to bring down. The game’s also getting Twitch integration so that you can broadcast your matches out to be viewed by the public eye if you so wish.

The beta can be accessed by paying to become a follower, but since the game is going to be free-to-play upon release it’s up to you if the thought of the game attracts you enough to want the early access.
