Nintendo unveil miniature “NES Classic” console with built-in games, HDMI output

There’s nothing better than playing old-school classic games on the original hardware. Sure, software emulators, Nintendo’s Virtual Console, and Steam re-releases may make it far easier to play older games and even bring them with you, but there’s just something about using the original controllers and playing on dedicated hardware that just feels right. Problem is, when those consoles are approaching three decades old, are chunky as hell, and the cartridges likely to now be rusted-out and playable – not to mention they use the kind of outputs like coaxial cables that are practically unheard of on modern generation TVs – who really wants to go to the effort of setting up an original NES once again to play games like Castlevania the way they were meant to be played?

If you’re one of the people who agrees with everything I just said, you might find Nintendo’s newest product announcement of interest. Enter the Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic Edition, a mini replica of the original console. The NES Classic Edition is designed to give you the feel of playing on original NES Hardware – the controller even looks and feels like the original – while removing all the inconveniences. While it won’t read your cartridges, the NES Classic Edition packs in 30 of the NES’s classic titles, which together offer a well-rounded sample of the best of NES history even if there are some decidedly odd choices – SUPER C but not the original Contra? Come on, Nintendo!

The full list of included games runs as follows: Balloon Fight, Bubble Bobble, Castlevania, Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest, Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr., Double Dragon II: The Revenge, Dr. Mario, Excitebike, Final Fantasy, Galaga, Ghosts’n Goblins, Gradius, Ice Climber, Kid Icarus, Kirby’s Adventure, Mario Bros., Mega Man 2, Metroid, Ninja Gaiden, Pac-Man, Punch-Out!! Featuring Mr. Dream, StarTropics, SUPER C, Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 2, Super Mario Bros. 3, Tecmo Bowl, The Legend of Zelda and Zelda II: The Adventure of Link.

NES Classic Mini Packaging

All this is packed into a miniaturised replica of the original NES hardware that’s small enough stand on your outstretched palm. The package also includes a HDMI cable so that the games can be played on modern HDTVs, and a single NES Classic Controller. The controllers and ports use the Firewire standard as used on the Wii Controller for its accessories – so sorry, original NES peripherals won’t work here, like they’d have much use anyway.

The system launches this November 11th for $59.99 across North America and the UK. However, it is interesting to note that the UK edition will not launch with its own AC adapter, which is included with the North American edition. Cheers for that, Nintendo. We still remember the 3DS XL…

Summer Games Done Quick raises nearly $1.3 million

Summer Games Done Quick has come to an end now, having shown off some great speedrunning from some of the best in the speedrunning community. Now we wait another six months for the Winter event, but until then it’s worth talking about the event and its tally.

It’s likely that you didn’t manage to catch all of the event but all of the speedruns have been backed up onto the event’s Youtube channel so you’ll be able to catch up on the games that interest you at your own leisure. Of course, one part that everyone seems to have watched is when Bl00d_Thunder’s Bioshock run seemed to be taken over by an inopportune Windows 10 update; really a fairly clever little prank that allowed the livestream to not suffer consequences from the game’s cutscenes later causing copyright issues when uploaded onto Youtube.

The main point of any Games Done Quick event though is that these speedrunners are gaming quickly for the sake of charity and fundraising and this event saw them raising for Doctors Without Borders, and their current amount as of time of writing is almost $1.3 million – $1,298,479.44 if you want to be precise about it. The average donation was about $42.10 with the single largest donation being more than $59.5k.

As always it’s great to see people gaming for charity and giving something to those organisations that deserve the help and support.

Summer Games Done Quick is now on

Every year Summer Games Done Quick broadcasts speedruns of video games, all in the name of fundraising for charity – and with many different channels for different languages to boot.

Speedrun is the art of finishing a game as quickly as possible, and often makes use of glitches and bugs within a game to skip chunks of game which is why older games are commonly seen on speedrunning channels. For those games that aren’t exploitable like this, speedrunning is instead a challenge of perfect timing of a chain of actions with one miss resulting in a longer time taken.

This time the charity in question that they’re raising money for is Doctors Without Borders, something that we can agree is a worthy cause.

If you’re interested to see what’s on the menu this time, the schedule can be found here. If you’re interested go and watch people destroy games (although not literally) and donate for a good cause. And if you’re not? Why not donate anyway? It’s still a good cause. 😀

Minecraft: The Movie gets release date of 2019

Video game movies seem to be everywhere right now, with game series such as Assassin’s Creed and Five Nights At Freddy’s having rumoured projects in the works and in the case of the former, a lot of hype beginning to build around a film coming soon to cinemas. Minecraft is another such game to have a project attached, and now we have a speculative release date for it.

Minecraft: The Movie will release on May 24th… 2019.

The official Mojang announcement on the date says, “Yes, that might seem like a long time away, but it just so happens to be the right amount of time to make it completely awesome. And we all want an awesome Minecraft movie, right?”

Yes, that would be nice. Video game movie adaptions don’t exactly have a great reputation – they’re usually terrible and only few ever manage to beat that. Given Minecraft’s open-world, sandbox nature god knows what sort of a story they’re going to pull from it; but open world does mean a lot of possibilities as well so I guess we’ll wait and see.

People attached to the project so far include the LEGO Movie producer Roy Lee doing the production with his Vertigo Entertainment production compnay as well as Jill Messick also helping with production. Other than that, details are still sparse.

Well, at least we’ve some idea now of when we can expect to start seeing actual news about the film. Right?
