Nintendo Files Patent For Console With No Disc Drive

Small_Nintendo_Logo

Nintendo has filed a patent for a console that apparently has no optical drive. A Neogaf user by the name of Rosti spotted the patent. It shows a schematic of a console that “is not provided with an optical disk drive”, according to the filing’s abstract. The patent further shows games stored on a hard drive and mentions “high speed communications such as ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) or optical communication as a way to deliver game data. This could allow Nintendo to go for an all digital future and deliver games via a server distribution process.

Also of note is the fact that the filing does show a card reader included in the console for reading and writing from devices “such as an SD memory card”. Nintendo has been relatively quiet about it’s new NX console due to concerns that competitors would try and capitalize on it’s ideas. If the filing is for the upcoming NX, it could mark a significant departure from traditional game delivery methods for the Big N.

Small_Nintendo_Logo

Do you like demos? Do you like indie games? I hope so, because Nintendo has announced that Wii U owners will be able to download demos for nine different games. All of them are part of the Nindies@Home program.

Starting now and running until 9:59 am PT on June 22, you can download and play the demos. As an added bonus, playing them will grant you a 15% discount on the full games for up to a month after their release.

This is an effort on Nintendo’s part to give people at home a little taste of what its like to actually be at E3 “along with a chance to try some amazing games” before launch, according to Damon Baker, Nintendo’s senior marketing manager of publisher and developer relations.

The games and publishers in ths program currently are:

  • Extreme Exorcism from Ripstone
  • forma.8 from Mixed Bag
  • Freedom Planet from Galaxy Trail
  • Lovely Planet from tinybuild and QUICKTEQUILA
  • Mutan Mudds Super Challenge from Renegade Kid

Special Edition Splatoon stock swiped in lorry heist

In today’s stranger news, a lorry has been stolen. Not just any lorry though, a lorry containing stock of the new Splatoon game as well as various associated Amiibo figurines that was on its way to GAME’s UK warehouse. No really.

The lorry had been on a journey from Nintendo’s European headquarters towards the warehouse, and what makes this theft all the more noticeable is that among copies of the standard game and standard Amiibo figurines were a sizeable number of the Special Edition copies of the game. In fact, GAME’s entire shipment of the Special Edition was in that lorry. That’s a pretty hefty theft.

GAME has now had to send out notifications to all customers who had pre-ordered the Special Edition to inform them of the situation and how because all of the allotted shipment was taken they are unfortunately unable to substitute the missing copies with other Special Edition games.

“We have no option but to substitute the Splatoon + Squid Inkling in your order with the standard version of the game. “You will still receive your Inkling Girl and Inkling Boy Amiibo. We will be discounting this edition by £10 from £52.99 to £42.99 to apologise for this inconvenience.”

No details have been made public about the circumstances around how the vehicle was taken, but Nintendo have told GamesRadar+ in a statement that they are working with GAME to contact all affected customers and apologised for the inconvenience caused to them as a result of the theft.

Dare say a lot of special games might soon make their way onto Ebay or into CEX…
