Animal Crossing, Mega Man, Punch-Out!!! and more get eShop discounts as part of new Nintendo Promotion

As everyone knows, the premise of Nintendo’s popular beat-em-up franchise Super Smash Bros. revolves around characters from several different Nintendo game series, who would never normally meet in their own games, coming together for an all-out brawl. But with the upcoming games Super Smash Bros. for 3DS / Wii U throwing not just more Nintendo characters into the mix such as the Wii Fit Trainer and the Animal Crossing human, but also entries from Namco (Pacman) and Capcom (Mega Man) joining too, Nintendo thinks it might be a good time for us to familiarise ourselves with the games behind the new names ahead of the official launch.

Nintendo UK and Nintendo of Europe today jointly announced a new promotion, cleverly – if lengthily – titled “Super Smash Bros. Character Sale: New Challengers“. Starting today (14th August) for one week, Nintendo gamers across the UK and Europe will be able to download select eShop titles for 3DS or Wii U featuring one of Smash’s more recent faces – from the old classics like Pac-Man and the six Mega Man NES titles, to more recent entries such as Animal Crossing: New Leaf – each at a generous discount ranging from 20% to 50% off the original eShop prices.

Punch-out fighter Little Mac gets a double-billing with his two debut games, Punch-Out!! and Super Punch-Out!! both at 50% off. Mii Characters also get two seperate outings, with Wii U owners getting Wii Party U for 30% off (now £24.49 / €31.49); while 3DS owners get Tomodachi Life at 20% off (£27.99 / €31.99) – weirdly, this results in Wii Party U, which is normally five Euros more expensive than Tomodachi Life for the rest of Europe, actually becoming the better deal, now undercutting by just half a Euro.

With the surprising introduction of the Wii Fit trainer as a fighter, Wii U users exclusively get Wii Fit U for 30% off this week too (now £20.99 / €24.49). Meanwhile, 3DS owners get the double-whammy of Animal Crossing: New Leaf and Kid Icarus: Uprising also at 30% off each (£24.49 / €27.99 and £20.99 / €24.49 respectively). Always-hungry pill-popper Pac-Man gets his classic arcade outing reduced to 50% off for both 3DS and Wii U. Finally for all you Mega Man fans (yay!), prepare for a Mega week as all six of Mega Man’s original NES outings are 50% off on 3DS and Wii U as well.

As the new challengers prepare to square off against unfamiliar opponents in Nintendo’s arena, this week gives Nintendo fans the chance to play their histories for even less than before. Who are you backing?

#Gamescom2014: Warlords of Dreanor cinematic and release date announcement

Wow-Warlords of Draenor

So, the World of Warcraft: Warlords of Draenor live event just finished and we have the release date for Warlords of Draenor now…

13th November 2014!

The release date was dropped at the end of the reveal of the new game cinematic leading into Warlords of Draenor.

The trailer shows Grommash Hellscream stepping up to drink the deamons blood from Gul’Dan, however, unlike the events of The Burning Crusade, this time Garrosh (Grommash’s son) has forewarned Grommash of the treachery and Grommash throws away the deamon blood.   Mannanoth then appears for destroy them all for their failure, but Garrosh has bought future weapons and helps Grommash kill mannanoth, forever changing the future of Draenor and Azeroth!

you can watch the full new cinematic below:

The other new thing Chris Metzen from Blizzard showed off during the event, was the new 5 part Lore animated shorts, Lords of War!  Chapter 1, Kargath Bladefist and the birth of the Shattered Hand clan.

The mostly stylised motion comic design is very appealing and really conveys the story of this early boss in Burning Crusade (One I very much enjoyed taking down and getting his fist as a weapon 😀 )

These lore animated shorts will be released on a weekly basis, so stay turned for more of those

You can watch the first episode of Lords of War below:

See you all in Draenor!

(Thanks to Gamespot for the videos and the live stream!)

Metal Gear Solid 5’s Steam future accidentally leaked by Konami

As gamers we always wonder about game releases. When is a game coming out? Is it going to be delayed? Is it worth pre-ordering or getting the special edition, or should I wait until it’s on its first sale? Is this game coming to any platform I own? We hope to hear news of any sort of confirmation, especially if it comes from an official source. So it’s always satisfying when we get that news, and when it’s a leak made by accident it somehow makes it better.

mgs5leak

Earlier Konami accidentally posted confirmation that the latest Metal Gear Solid game will have a PC port on Steam. Before the Konami presentation at Gamescom. Oops. The link didn’t go anywhere, taking anyone clicking to it to an error page. It was also quickly pulled down but not before some people got screenshots like the one above. Hideo Kojima has since confirmed that the leaked confirmation was for real.

Good news for those Metal Gear fans who prefer to do their gaming on custom build PCs.

Robin Williams NPC to be added to World of Warcraft as a tribute

There’s few people who didn’t react in some way to the news of the death of comedian and actor Robin Williams. The man was a part of the childhood of many young adults, myself included, and he seemed almost immortal with his jokes and overall positive aura. Among the things he enjoyed was a good game of WoW and thanks to a petition supported by fans of the game and the entertainer, Williams’ legacy will get a chance to live on through this game.

willaims

Started shortly after the news, the text of the petition hosted on Change.org says that Williams could be “something of a troll in trade on good days or when anonymity allowed” and that he made many mentions in interviews of enjoying a game of Warcraft III and even built his own overclocked PC systems to game on. The petition was to see if Blizzard would agree to add an NPC somewhere in the game who would perform some of the more memorable and funny jokes that Williams made. Within less that 24 hours, over 10 thousand people signed and Blizzard said yes.

“While a single non-player character in a video game is only a small good thing to come out of a largely negative situation — many cannot help but feel that they’ve preserved a tiny spark of who Mr. Williams was: a gamer, and a character.” wrote petition organiser Jacob Holgate, thanking all those who supported the petition despite other players making negative comments about the idea.

Blizzard confirmed the tribute by a reply to a Tweet from Technical Game Designer, Chadd Nervigg asking if he’d seen the petition yet. They have promised to handle the creation of the NPC with the sensitivity and care needed to pay proper tribute to the comedian.

Rise of the Tomb Raider Might Not Be As Exclusive As You Think

Rise_of_the_tomb_raider

Microsoft caused a (predictable) eruption of fan rage yesterday when it announced that Rise of the Tomb Raider would be an Xbox exclusive. Never fear though, it turns out that this is just another example of the corporate suits twisting the english language to suit their own needs. Rise of the Tomb Raider is simply a timed exclusive. So, the game will release first on Xbox One and 360, then will come to other platforms at a later date. While this might be irritating, its certainly nothing new in the gaming world.

Phil Spencer, head of Xbox, spoke to Eurogamer about the deal:

“There are certain things I’m just not going to talk about because it’s a business deal between us and then. Obviously the deal does have a duration. I didn’t buy the IP in perpetuity.”

The confusion came from the statements from Crystal Dynamics, developer of the game:

“As you may have seen, we’ve just announced that Rise of the Tomb Raider, coming Holiday 2015, is exclusively on Xbox. “

and Microsoft’s own press release:

“Led by the announcement that “Rise of the TombRaider” from Crystal Dynamics will launch in holiday 2015, exclusively on Xbox…”

While it might be annoying to have the people responsible for announcing these games be so unclear, at this point its just par for the (unacceptable) course.
