Halo 5 was announced yesterday and already speculation is rife about what the new game might bring in terms of story, locations, weaponry, vehicles, enemies… and about the identity of the Spartan pictured on the game’s launch artwork piece which shows them standing on top of Master Chief with the game’s long-time protagonist appearing in a way that looks like the mystery Spartan’s reflection in some unseen pool of water.
The answer for the last one came today in the form of a tweet from Josh Holmes who is a dev on the game. Well, sort of.
For everyone speculating about the mysterious Spartan in Halo 5: Guardians, he’s not Palmer (or Cortana!). He’s a NEW character. 🙂 #Halo
‘Palmer’ refers to Commander Sarah Palmer from Halo 4 and Halo: Spartan Assault and Cortana is Master Chief’s long-time companion. So if this tweet is to be believed we can soon count a new character among the ranks of the Spartans who have been named characters in the past Halo games.
Not many more details have yet been released, except for art of a dry, dusty alien settlement which could be a potential location for the next set of Spartan adventurers and inevitable battles. We’ll just have to wait until E3 to get the big reveals though.

Operation Supply Drop is a charity effort to help support military. The idea is that money is raised to then be used to buy games for the forces to then use and play on, helping to allievate stress and provide much needed distraction from the other things that war is generally known for. It helps to combat the effects of post-traumatic stress disorder, depression and a whole host of other mental issues that soldiers are prone to. A noble cause.
However, they are currently as of writing running their annual 24-hour stream called the 8-Bit Salute to raise some of this money, featuring prominently guys from the Rooster Teeth group among others. It began at 2pm BST. An hour later at 3pm the group’s website had already been DDoS’d by hackers. In fact, as I am writing this the website is still down thanks to what the group is calling a sustained, organised DDoS attack, although the stream is thankfully still going strong.
The #8BitSalute site has been attacked, please continue to support via PayPal to donations@operationsupplydrop.org while we fix

DDoS update: we’re still down. Report is that this is a targeted and continuous attack. Donate via PayPal donations@operationsupplydrop.org

It’s not all bad news though. As mentioned the stream is still going and the replies to the group’s messages informing the Internet of why their website is down suggest that the majority of the gaming community are outraged that some people want to spoil it for the rest of us. In fact, the attack might even have gotten the stream attention quicker than it would have otherwise. And despite the website being down, it is still possible to donate to the charity through Paypal or by buying a limited edition poster of the Achievement Hunter group via Rooster Teeth’s store (already got mine) for $10/£6.
But yes, long story short: despite the efforts of a few, maybe we can still have nice things. Or work together to get nice things to people who could use them.

Following swiftly on the heels of their Kinect-free Xbox One, Microsoft have revealed the details of the next Halo game, titles ‘Halo 5: Guardians’.
Due to the next-gen console it is destined to be on, we’re told that this Halo game has been built from the ground-up and with the idea of pushing the Halo experience to new heights by utilising the better hardware of the Xbox One and telling even greater stories to really show off the platform’s potential. And why not? Halo is very much a part of the fabric of the Xbox, having been there since the original Xbox as a launch title.
They’re promising that as a game Halo 5 will be much bigger and better than Halo 4. Right now details are scarce, but with E3 around the corner and Microsoft going to show off their new toys it’s very likely that a whole lot of them will be emerging very soon to the joy of Halo-fans everywhere.
