Indie Game Review: Qbeh-1: The Atlas Cube

Qbeh-1: The Atlas Cube is an atmospheric first-person puzzle platformer by the developers Liquid Flower where you explore a unique world and solve puzzles using a variety of different cubes you collect as you go through the levels. This game is a “prequel” to the short student project game called Qbeh which you can find on Desura for free.

QBEH1

This game goes far beyond the original. It contains 5 different Worlds, each with 6 Levels to beat. Each world introduces a new mechanic to the gameplay, steadily increasing the difficulty and complexity as you go.

QBEH2

To solve puzzles you need to use the various cubes you find around the levels. The first one you come across is a red cube that can be used to build steps, bridges, etc. These are usually the most common ones you come across. These cubes, and any other cubes, are only allowed to be place on designated yellow areas or on each other.

QBEH4

The next cube you come across is a blue cube, when placed on a special block can activate various things like locked doors, fans, and moving platforms. After that you come across a purple cube which creates a low gravity area around where it’s placed. This allows the player to jump higher or further. The fourth cube you get is a green one that when placed becomes a moving platform.

QBEH3

Each level also has a secondary challenge. In each level there is a hidden secret golden pyramid that you can find. Sometimes you find them by chance just exploring the level, other times you have to think though the best way to get to them.

QBEH5

The atmosphere of this game is actually very nice. The music creates a calming atmosphere though most of the game. The world, while somewhat simple, is beautiful to look at. As you go from world to world, the shades and colors change as well as new environmental touches are added.

QBEH6

So if you are looking for a calming yet challenging game, Qbeh-1 is a good game to try. It encourages you to take your time to explore and solve puzzles, all the while the music sets soothing atmosphere. If you are still unsure whether you will enjoy it I would suggest trying out the short original game available free on Desura. It only contains some of the basic puzzle solving using the red blocks, but it will give you an idea how the “prequel” is.

Qbeh-1: The Atlas Cube is available for Windows and Mac on Steam.

#E32014: Assassin’s Creed Unity Multiplayer demonstrated

On the stage at E3, a new game play video for the Assassin’s Creed Unity game was shown off as part of the Xbox presentation today. In it was shown off the setting of France during the Revolution, just as the working classes hungered for the lives of the nobility and demonstrated the co-op function of the game which was revealed yesterday in a banner at the event.

In it the player used the skills the Assassin’s Creed franchise is known for to get inside a palace with three other players, quickly and silently making their way through to a ball where the target noble and main target was quickly and swiftly dispatched. The screen was mostly set on one player but changed towards the end to show a four-way split-screen view that hankered back to old days of local multiplayer gaming.

Assassin’s Creed is an open-world stealth and attack game due to come out on the Xbox One, Playstation 4 and PC later on this year.
