Beta codes for The Elder Scrolls Online released

If you have been following the new MMO The Elder Scrolls Online’s progress recently and actually opted into the Beta, I suggest you check the e-mail you gave them. A whole bunch of codes have been sent out in the last day inviting even more players to come enter the massive online world of Tamriel, at least for a few days.

This weekend the gates will open for a beta weekend event, in which many will race into the world to desperately level their characters to the point of unlocking the PvP at Level 10 before the event is over on Monday. And it will be a race because access to the game will last from Friday, Feb 7th 12pm EST/5pm GMT until Monday, Feb 10 11:59pm EST/4:59pm GMT.

Those of you who are Curse members and haven’t had a code e-mailed to you do have another option though. Curse.com has been given a further 500,000 codes to distribute among their members, although it is worth noting that Premium members get dibs on the codes until tomorrow so it might be an idea to get in there fast when they are opened to other members to take.

Just a reminder though, if you do get a key remember that there is still an NDA in place. No screenshots, details, videos etc. can be passed around or spoken about until that is lifted so be careful what you say, as access to the game can be removed if you break it and if you’ve been anxiously waiting for your chance to get into Tamriel it would be a shame to lose your chance.

Bethesda has said that the launch for PC and Mac is on the horizon and the Beta is growing all the time. This means more keys will likely be sent out soon so if you aren’t lucky this time, don’t lose hope of getting into the closed Beta tests of the game.

That said, I hope to see some of you in Tamriel soon. 😀

ESRB leaks info on Dark Souls II Bosses

The ESRB’s content description for Dark Souls include details about the game’s bosses.

Dark_Souls_II_cover

*WARNING! Potential spoilers ahead!*

One of the best parts of Dark Souls is that terrible moment when you get your first look at a boss. You’ll turn a corner or enter a new area and suddenly find yourself face-to-face with some unthinkable creature that you can just tell outclasses you in every way possible. More often than not, this moment will only last a few seconds (long enough to die), but it’s a wonderful sort of dread that other games frequently struggle with.

That in mind, the ESRB recently released some content descriptors that could potentially spoil that feeling for Dark Souls II. In addition to describing the game’s “dungeon-like setting” and “fantastical enemies,” the group’s descriptors also includes some specific details about the game’s bosses. Among the spoilers is “a giant snake boss holding its severed head,” a “boss creature composed of hundreds of corpses” and a “partially topless” boss character with “hair barely covering [her] breasts.”

Now, to be fair, these aren’t the worst spoilers we’ve ever seen, even from the ESRB itself. Likewise, chances are there aren’t going to be too many Dark Souls fans flocking to the group’s website to check and make sure the game is age appropriate. That said, you really do have to wonder if there could perhaps be ways for the ESRB to be a tad more discerning in what it reveals about the games it rates. Granted, we could also just not report about it, but clearly that’s not going to happen.

Starbound releases the Furious Koala (patch)!

The patch that many players watching Chucklefish and Starbound had been waiting for has released. Furious Koala is the patch that finally brought “massive changes to disk serialization”. In other words – no more character wipes.

While this comes as a relief to most players, those who still want to play characters they will lose can choose to play in the new ‘permadeath’ mode. Other big changes include dropped items no longer despawning, saving many a player from rushing headlong into caves and breaking their necks in long drops trying to retrieve a treasured weapon before it vanishes, more move sets for the randomly generated beasts you find wandering planets, the removal of all Christmassy elements that the last patch brought in and a line that worryingly just says “Watch out for landmines”…

We’ll be diving into the game soon with some friends to show off the gameplay of Starbound soon, so keep watching. It should be good.

Patch notes are here.
