#PAXSouth: Gearbox announce Homeworld Remastered Collection

Gearbox Software have officially announced the Homeworld Remastered Collection at PAX South today. It will feature a high-definition update to all the assets within the game, new voice-recordings for the cast who did the original voice acting and new cinematics that are updated in quality but stay true to the original cinematics’ themes and style. It will also include access to a new Homeworld Remastered Steam Multiplayer Beta, an attempt at combining both of the classic games into one platform for a wider variety.

Homeworld Remastered

Gearbox acquired Homeworld back in 2013 when they bid for it at an auction for the sale of assets that belonged to the then recently-defunct studio THQ. Both Paradox and Stardock had also been in the bidding for the IP. In those nearly two years Gearbox have set about giving the classic games an update and overhauled as much as they can while still attempting to stay true to the original games. That can mostly be seen in the decision to bring back as many of the original voice actors as possible, a move that will probably please fans of the original versions of these games. In fact, the fan community’s feedback had an effect on how the remaster was done.

“We received a lot of great feedback from the passionate Homeworld fan community, and we hope to deliver a game they – and new fans from around the world – can get lost in for countless hours to come.” said Brian Martel, CCO at Gearbox Software.

The release date is set for February 25th, but pre-orders will have a 15% discount to the price. Otherwise everyone who buys the Remastered Collection will get both Homeworld and Homeworld 2 as well as access to the Steam Multiplayer Beta.

Mythbusters to do special on FPS ‘myths’

Mythbusters, the popular Discovery TV show known for its crazy experiments and use of model building and robotics to test the science and realities of well-known myths, have announced that one of their upcoming specials will be based on the subject of first-person shooter games.

mythbusters_large

They’ll be aided in this by the developer of the DOOM games, id Software, or to be more specific their Studio Director, Tim Willits. Among the questions posed will be “Is it really possible for someone to carry all those health packs, guns, and even a chainsaw?” and they’ll be taking cues from the DOOM universe and DOOM 3 BFG Edition to recreate a DOOM level in real-life.

It’s not yet certain which other myths and questions will be tried out, but given that it’s Mythbusters it’s probably going to end in something exploding. There’s a teaser that is embedded below if you want a sneak peek, but the episode itself will broadcast on Saturday, January 31st at 9PM on the Discovery Channel.

Defective Bowser Amiibo Might Give Kids Nightmares

Nintendo has been making a splash with its new Amiibo figures. The next wave is due to hit in February, containing characters like Rosalina, Meta Knight and Bowser.

Not all Bowser Amiibos are created equal though. Twitter user @KyanosTiger posted this shot of a defective Bowser who seems to have misinterpreted the old saying about having your hat in your hands. Defective Amiibos are nothing new, and theres no word yet on if KyanosTiger will hang onto this Bowser or sell it online. Considering it’s liekly nightmare fuel, I might sell it for some money. You know, before it comes to life and devours my soul while I sleep…..

EA give you the chance to try Sims 4 for a bit for free

Electronic Arts has added the newest addition to the Sims franchise to its Game Time lineup on Origin. Game Time is a little like the On The House in that you can get games without paying for them, but unlike On The House you only get a limited amount of time to try out the game before your ‘demo’ period is up and you decide whether you like the game enough to buy it.

The Sims 4 is available to try once downloaded for 48 hours, and while that doesn’t start the minute it’s done downloading it’ll start from the first time you play it and then ticks down in real-time. Probably best then to wait until you’ve a nice chunk of free time to give it a go then. If you do choose to buy it, you’ll keep your progress and saves too, which is nice.

Browse to Origin’s Game Time page if you’re interested. While you’re there, you might want to check out some of the other games which include Titanfall and Battlefield 4.

Dying Light’s “Be the Zombie” now free for all players

Recently Techland announced that while the digital release date for their open-world zombie game with parkour was going to be kept, there was going to be a little schedule slippage regarding the shipping of physical boxed copies of the game for all regions outside of North America.

Fortunately they’ve now given a date to expect those regions to be receiving those copies and thrown in a bonus as a result of the fans sticking with them and giving them support. The multiplayer mode “Be the Zombie”, which was previous a preorder-only bonus is now going to be free to everyone. Nice.

In a statement the studio said: “Although the changes affect only the release of boxed copies in certain territories, we want to show all of you our appreciation for your continued support. Thus, we’re really happy to announce that ‘Be the Zombie’ will be available for free to everyone, on all platforms, in all territories.”

As well as this preorders of the physical game will also include the Cuisine & Cargo and Ultimate Survivor Bundle DLC packs at no charge. They can also be registered at dockets.dyinglightgame.com for “dockets” that can then be exchanged for in-game weaponry.

The release date for the physical copies outside of the NA region is February 27th. If you’re going digital though, the release date is still January 27th.
