Book Review: Horus Heresy: Know No Fear

Unaware of the wider Heresy and following the Warmaster’s increasingly cryptic orders, Roboute Guilliman returns to Ultramar to muster his Legion for war against the orks massing in the Veridian system. Without warning, their supposed allies in the Word Bearers Legion launch a devastating invasion of Calth, scattering the Ultramarines fleet and slaughtering all who stand in their way. This confirms the worst scenario Guilliman can imagine – Lorgar means to settle their bitter rivalry once and for all. As the traitors summon foul daemonic hosts and all the forces of Chaos, the Ultramarines are drawn into a grim and deadly struggle in which neither side can prevail.

Horus Heresy: Know No Fear

Another Horus Heresy novel and this time finally bringing the spotlight on Guilliman and his Ultramarine legion!  Dan Abnett reminds us just HOW badass Guilliman truly is.  BUT, theres not enough of him, this is a novel about his Legion, his transhuman sons and NOT Guilliman himself, unlike Deliverance Lost, which is all centered around Corax, we know who Guilliman is, we know the Ultramarines and we also know that Know No Fear is the direct follow up to The First Heretic and following the betrayal  and near destruction of the Ultramarines by Orgar and his Word Bearer Legion, after the Emperor chose Guilliman and the Ultramarines as his honour guard to bring the Word BBearers to heal about the over zealous nature that they revered the Emperor as a god.

The other side of things this book expertly sums up for 40k fans, and more importantly, fans of Uriel Ventrus from Graham Mcneill's Ultramarine novels, is how Calth became the underground culture is is in the 41st millenium!

But the big thing about this book, is showing Guilliman (and the other primarch's) for just HOW badass they are, especially in their armour!  This 10 foot tall Demigod can survive WITHOUT a helmet, on the skin of his ship and the slight atmosphere that clings to the hull because of the gravity the ships mahoosive size actually creates!

Know No Fear has epic space battles, land battles, stories of death, loss and hope.  But mostly, it's a tale of betrayal, while the Iron Hands, Raven Guard and sAlamanders are being near to wiped out on Istvaan 5, Lorgar sends the Word Bearer's to calth to take out the Ultramarines, the only legion truely big enough to single handedly turn Horus' betrayal away from Terra and with the Space Wolves off taking out the Thousand Sons for Magnus' flouting of the Nikea Edict, only the Ultramarines are the last enemy chess piece that needs removing from the board and Lorgar manages it and shows Guilliman why the Nikea Edict needs to be abolished to destroy the Daemons the traitor legions are using!

The one thing that show's through out Dan Abnett's books, is that there is an incredible amount of detail, he knows this universe inside and out, he fleshes out characters and places and draws you in.  If you haven;t read a dAn Abnett novel, they can be slow, but in a good way, they draw you in and as this is a Horus Heresy novel, its a good intro into Dan Abnett's writing aswell (although you've read one or two already by him if you are reading the Heresy novels in order anyway)

Fantastic novel, great follow up from The First Heretic and ties up lots of knowledge about the Ultramarines, how they fight, how they live and even how they die.  It gives more information about the scale of the Heresy and just how planned it all is by the traitor primarchs and Horus!

Utterly fantastic, a must read!

DvD review: Superman vs. The Elite

The Man of Steel finds himself outshone by a new team of ruthless superheroes who hold his idealism in contempt.

Superman vs. The Elite

Ok, this was a fantastic Superman adventure.  But with a twist, Superman, being bought upto date with current events and tensions that effect us all on a daily basis int eh really real world and the speed that peoples opinions can shift

Superman is Superman, we all know he would lay his life ont he line to save even those that don't deserve saving, BUT, what if the people cry out for blood, even from him?  What if a new group of "super heroes" on the scene are willing to take the next step and kill those that, at first break the law, but then go too far…  How far can Superman be pushed, how much can he take and will he survive?

George Newbern reprises as voice talent for Superman From Superman/Batman and does a great job of an old school Superman, doubting his place in a modern world.  Pauley Perrette (the only reason I watch NCIS anymore) voices Lois Lane and is fantastic, a brilliant juxtaposition to Supermans old school, out of touch nature and shows she wears the trousers in this relationship, even if Superman wears the tights and cape (I can't believe I put it that way…  so corny)

Unlike the Prometheus review, no spoilers here, so watch it!

Superman vs. The Elite is out June 12, 2012 on DvD/Blu-Ray double pack

9 outta 10 guys, grab it!

FPS General Goes Hands-On with Defiance

Full quote from Curse.com (good find guys!)

Defiance is the amazing new TV Show-Video Game hybrid coming from SyFy Channel and Trion Worlds. The crew over at FPS General had a chance to get some hands-on time with the game at E3 in Los Angeles and it looks great – take a look for yourself!  We were also able to get some details from the development team about gameplay and integration with the show:

  • Instanced dungeons and raids, which players will group for
  • Many different types of vehicles
  • All players will exist int he same world, and integrated VoIP is a real possibility
  • Both the show and game will launch about the same time:  Game actions will affect the show, but it's unknown how long of a lag there will be between actions on the game vs. the show
  • The show may cover the back stories of the main character, or even change to cover more people in the world
  • Ammo management isn't a huge concern, as all monsters will drop ammo and other loot
  • Players will be able to rank up and unlock mods for their weapons. Mods are things like new scopes, grips, magazine upgrades, etc.
  • Outfits are going to be a large part of the game, and will somehow encourange like-minded people to pool their resources and play together
  • Dynamic events will constantly occur throughout the world, in different scopes
  • Dynamic action events will require good aim, friends, and planning to take down large enemies, such as shooting specific spots, or kiting enemies
  • There will be both underground and above-ground events and instances
  • You can resurrect teammates, or spawn at the closest respawn point

Guild Wars 2: The Big Beta Weekend Preview

It’s almost here—the second Guild Wars 2 Beta Weekend Event begins this Friday! For three days, players from all over the world will experience the wonders and dangers of Tyria—and a ton of cool new content!

Keep Your Characters!

Or create new human, norn, or charr characters and start a whole new story. Since players will be able to play with their existing characters from the first Beta Weekend Event, they can experience some of the new higher level content.

Enter the Catacombs (Explorable Mode)

Looking for a real challenge? Try out the explorable mode of the Ascalonian Catacombs dungeon for groups of ambitious level 35+ players. The tough explorable mode of the Catacombs presents a party with three different paths through the dungeon, each with its own dangers and rewards. Enter if you dare!

Visit Lovely Gendarran Fields

We’ve opened up a new map, Gendarran Fields, for players to explore. A level 25 to 35 map just outside Lion’s Arch, Gendarran Fields is a picturesque area of pine trees and rolling hills, teeming with wild beasts and bandit gangs.

Unlock the Mysteries of the Mystic Forge

On a less dangerous note, the Mystic Forge has arrived in Lion’s Arch. This strange forge actually holds the imprisoned djinn Zommoros, who hails from distant Elona. If you offer the Mystic Forge gifts (like unneeded items and weapons), you will receive a gift in return. Got a pair of pistols that you don’t need?

Drop them in the Mystic Forge and see what Zommoros gives you in exchange!

Expanded World vs. World

Once again, the Mists will echo with the sound of combat as we open up World vs. World for the weekend. As usual, massive armies of players from different servers will battle for supremacy on four huge maps, but this time we’ve added a couple of interesting new twists.

Players can now take their WvW battle underground in a new “mini dungeon” beneath the central map. This brand-new subterranean level is full of tricks and traps that can be used against enemy players, and is home to the aptly named Dark Room, which players will have to see (or not) to believe.

We’ve also added skill challenges, dynamic events, and even jump puzzles to the WvW maps. Why are these PvE elements being integrated into WvW gameplay? “We want to make the transition from PvE to World vs. World easy and natural for players,” says developer Matt Witter. “We always wanted additional meaningful content on the WvW maps so that players will always have something to do, even if the frontline of battle is far away.”

New Automated Player vs. Player Tournaments and More

For this beta, we’re introducing Automated PvP Tournaments. Each tournament pits eight teams of five players against each other. Teams that excel during the three-round, single-elimination tournament are rewarded with tournament chests full of valuable loot.

The PvP reward system has also been greatly improved with the creation of a two-tier reward structure that involves Glory and Rank. Put simply, Glory is a currency that players can spend to unlock reward chests stuffed with useful loot, while Rank is a measurement of your success in PvP. You’ll receive valuable reward chests as you climb in Rank.

Combat— “A Sense of Hitting”

Combat in Guild Wars 2 is more visceral than ever. We’re constantly making improvements to the entire combat experience—better timing, enhanced sound design, subtle camera shakes—to enhance what designer Jon Peters likes to call “the sense of hitting.”

Improved Overflow Servers

We listened to a lot of the input we received from players regarding their experience with overflow servers in the first Beta Weekend Event, and we’ve implemented a new party UI that tells you when party members are on a different overflow world. We’ve also given party members the ability to fast travel to overflow worlds where other members of their party are located, and we’ve made it easier to keep party members together when moving between maps. It’s all designed to give you as smooth an experience as possible.

Improved Chat

Communication in general has been greatly improved, as well. We’re adding the much-requested chat bubbles, as well as map chat and an updated local chat function, both of which make it easier to communicate with other players.

New Key-Binding Feature

This is one of our most requested features. For those who want to customize their gameplay experience, we’re introducing a new, easy-to-use key-binding interface, which now allows you to bind modifier keys.

UI Improvements

MMO players are often very particular about their user interface, and we’re no exception. We’ve listened to your feedback and have refined our UI to make it even easier to use. We’ve revamped the mini-map in the bottom-right corner of the screen. The formerly round mini-map is now square and can easily be resized for better navigation.

UI Art Lead Vicki Ebberts says, “Little adjustments, like making the map resizable or wrapping the dodge meter around the top of the health bubble, may not seem like a big deal at first, but over the course of many hours spent playing a game, you start to appreciate a well-designed interface.”

Tiers for Skills

We’ve organized each profession’s elite and utility skills into three different tiers, or levels. When you get enough skills in one tier, you unlock the next level of skills. Why the change from the previous model, which let players choose from all the available skills at once?

“The tier system gives players both a sense of progression and accomplishment,” says Lead Designer Eric Flannum. “It encourages them to experiment with different skills as they increase in power, and it avoids overwhelming new players with a huge list of skills to choose from.”

“Plus,” Flannum adds, “the tier system is more scalable and expandable. We can more easily add new skills in the future with this system.”

The Gem Store is under New Management

The Black Lion Trading Company out of Lion’s Arch has officially taken over operation of the Gem Store, Currency Exchange, and Trading Post. Its new owner’s first action was to completely overhaul the Gem Store.

As a result, the all-new Gem Store is easier to use and has a greater variety of items, from the decorative—like dye packs and costumes—to the whimsical—like the Box o’ Fun, which spawns a chest that applies random crazy effects to everyone who touches it. Each beta player will receive 500 free gems on their account, so do a little shopping on us!

In Closing…

There’s no shortage of things to see and do during our second Beta Weekend Event, and this is just a small sample of what awaits you when you log in.

We’ll see you in-game from Friday, June 8th, at noon PDT (GMT-7) until Sunday, June 10th, at 11:59 p.m. PDT (GMT-7).

What do you think of the new blog post and changes?  what about the new minimap?

DvD Review: Tekken: Blood Vengeance

Tekken: Blood Vengeance

Ok, this animated take on the on going Tekken Story is awful, I mean seriously awful…

The animation is passable for the most part, and the fight scenes are actually pretty good, BUT, and this is my quibble, during the fight scenes especially the animation falls down teh same way teh game animation does…  All the characters have, seemingly, dislocatable bone sockets…

Now this alone would have not been an issue if the lip syncing for the English dub wasn't ATTROCIOUS!  A couple of times I wondered if the soundtrack itself might be out of sync, but no, its actually poor lip syncing over the obvious Japanese lip syncing…

And WORST of all, the story…  I'm not a fan of some of the characters in the game, but c'mon, Ling Xiaoyu and her panda, alongside the Android Alisa…  and making Lee a creepy teacher?  HE was one of my fave game characters, I can't even play him now…

Awful…

1 out of 10…  Steer Clear
