Minecraft's XP System Detailed

There's now a lot more to lose than just your gear when you die.

US, July 21, 2011

As work on Minecraft's massive "Adventure Update" continues onward, the game's creator is teasing more tidbits about some of the new features being planned for the next big game-changing update. A new Beta screenshot posted on Notch's Twitter feed earlier this week shows interesting additions to the user interface, including one indicator that appears to track hunger and another mysterious meter that hinted at an experience system in the works.

In an interview with PC Gamer, Notch confirmed that you'll be able to earn XP points and level-up as you play, though he hasn't quite settled on how the system will work or explained what kind of extra rewards, if any, will be doled out as you gain levels. This system also comes with a potentially nerve-wracking risk: dying means you'll lose everything – at least that's one of the ideas he's toying with.

Details are still pretty fluid at this point, but it looks like the addition of XP and catastrophic death will add a new layer of depth to the gameplay. Will the risk be worth the reward? What are your thoughts? Feel free to comment below.

Not sure what I think about "catastrophic death", but at the very least, it's good to see this update will at least make Minecraft's "Game over!" screen mean something...
