Dragon Age II Pulled from Steam, EA Responds

EA: "We hope to work out an agreement to keep our games on Steam."

US, July 28, 2011

Dragon Age II was pulled from online games retailer Steam after the game's first downloadable expansion, Legacy, was released this week.

It's believed that due to the expansion being purchasable from within the game, and not the Steam client, that lead to Valve dropping the game completely. Dragon Age: Origins is still available, however.

EA would not address the specific reasons for why Dragon Age II was removed, only saying it hopes to reach an agreement with Valve in the future.

"At EA, we offer our games and content to all major download services including GameStop, Amazon, Direct2Drive and Steam," said David DeMartini, SVP of Global E-Commerce for EA in a statement given to IGN.

"Unfortunately, Steam has adopted a set of restrictive terms of service which limit how developers interact with customers to sell downloadable content. No other download service has adopted this practice. Consequently some of our games have been removed by Steam.

"We hope to work out an agreement to keep our games on Steam."

Last month, EA's Crysis 2 was also pulled from Steam after downloadable content was released for the game. EA denied any involvement with the move, saying it was due to a distribution deal for the DLC that violated Valve's agreement.

This is really starting to annoy me because I love steam and everything that valve does. If I am going to purchase a PC game 90% of the time I will use steam to do it, because it is just so easy and they have such good deals at some points. The next EA game I am going to purchase is not until Battlefield 3 and I seriously do not feel that I will buy it for the PC if it is not on Steam. Hopefully EA will realise that they need steam their games on steam before that happens.

I'll be honest, I only really buy EA products on consoles now, and even then usually preowned... I have no interest in giving EA my money anymore

i agree with you but i was a massive battlefield 2 fan and if it is anything like that i will have to buy it no matter what, but i could actually see myself getting it for the xbox if it is not on steam. but a lot of my favourite games are now EA based games like crysis, Mass Effect, Fifa and Battlefield so i cannot help but give them money grabbing bastards my money lol

I admit though, I bought Crysis 2 preorder on steam, and glad I did before Steam removed that too :D

They're just being pissy, like most other game companies. It sucks that people have to deal with Steam not carrying it, but oh wait, you can just add the game to Steam with the shortcut menu... Meh, I say get over it if you want a game you'll get the game. No need for a bunch of people to get upset about it.
