Warhammer 40,000: Dark Millennium gets a release date, additional information comes out

In the grim dark future of the 41st millennium, there may only be war, but that’s no bad thing for MMO players looking forward to Warhammer 40k: Dark Millennium. There’s also been a big information dump for the game too, including a release date. Don’t hold your breath though, because it won’t be coming out until March 13th, 2013. That’s quite a while for now. Just to make that wait worse though, here’s some more information that still not actually verified:

The biggest release that appeared on the Warseer forums was that combat in Dark Millennium will not be the traditional MMO flare. Instead, it looks like they are targeting something far closer to Gears of War and Space Marine for ranged combat, including cover systems. For melee combat, they’re looking to make it similar to both Space Marine and their own game Darksiders. So, cover based shooting and combo-based hack and slash action in an MMO? That would be a pretty significant departure from the norm.

It looks like we’ll at least be seeing the Imperium, Eldar, Ork, and Chaos races, with the former two being grouped under the ‘Order’ faction and the latter two under the ‘Disorder’ faction. If that means your future Space Marine can’t crack the skulls of some Space Elves remains to be seen. Other races, including Tau, Dark Eldar, Necron, and Tyranids will likely be brought in with later expansions. This is good, because the Tau are awesome, and should be playable as soon as possible.

Your future Space Marine (or Assassin, or Techpriest, or psyker…) will be able to do a lot of skull-cracking though. The game will feature both open PvP areas and instanced PvP zones. This will likely be primarily faction based.

The game will be running on the same engine that Darksiders used, and it also sounds like Relic is lending a very small hand into the development as well. Given that they’ve been sheepherding Warhammer PC games for a while, that makes some sense.

Besides the release date though, none of this information is actually confirmed, and this needs to be strongly emphasized. Anything in this could be wrong, and even if it is correct now, we might see major changes between now and March 2013. For the time being, if you’d like to see more information, you can check out the original post on Warseer.

Jagex Gives Players Chance to Name Characters In Transformers Universe

Jagex has announced a really exciting contest for their upcoming game, Transformers Universe. The game itself is due out in 2012 and will let players experience a Massively Multiplayer Online game set in the iconic Transformers world, with a battle raging between the Autobots and the Decepticons.

The contest that Jagex is running is in conjuntion with their activities at New York City Comic-Con for the game. Players are being given the option to name both the Autobot and Decepticon player classes for one particular class. Jagex is running a poll with three predetermined choices for each faction as well as a spot to write in your own suggestion. The most popular entry will win when the contest closes on October 16th.

Managing Editor Bill Murphy said, “This is a truly exciting event for MMO and TRANSFORMERS fans to have a chance to do and we are really just ecstatic to be exclusively hosting one of the polls. Fan and player involvement at this stage of development is unprecedented and I think people will be floored to have a chance at influencing the names of two of the classes in this hugely anticipated game.” Voting on MMORPG.com will run at the same time as the first poll and will open at 4:00 PM EDT on Thursday October 13, and will close at 6:00 PM EDT Sunday October 16.

Fans wishing to cast their vote should visit http://www.mmorpg.com/transformers_universe_poll.cfm to find out more.

Sony suspends PSN accounts after hack attack

Sony has locked down up to 93.000 user accounts following an attack on the company’s servers. A similar attack earlier this year took down the PlayStation Network for several weeks.

Hackers attempted to access secure data held on the PlayStation Network, Sony Entertainment Network and the Sony Online Entertainment service using what the company described on the PlayStation Blog as a ‘massive’ set of login IDs and passwords.

Sony’s Chief Information Security Officer, Philip Reitinger, posted a statement to the PlayStation blog which described the attack and the steps Sony is taking to secure their networks.

“We want to let you know that we have detected attempts on Sony Entertainment Network, PlayStation Network and Sony Online Entertainment […] services to test a massive set of sign-in IDs and passwords against our network database.

“As a preventative measure, we are requiring secure password resets for those PSN/SEN accounts that had both a sign-in ID and password match through this attempt. If you are in the small group of PSN/SEN users who may have been affected, you will receive an email from us at the address associated with your account that will prompt you to reset your password.”

A much larger attack in April of this year forced Sony to take the PlayStation Network offline after millions of user accounts were compromised and personal information was stolen from the company’s servers. Sony drew criticism at the time for not reacting quickly enough or acknowledging the problem until it was too late. Reitingier, a former US Homeland Security official, was hired in the wake of that PR disaster, used his statement to advise users on how to choose secure passwords and to be vigilant for ‘unusual’ activity in their accounts.

Tribes: Ascend closed beta kicks off November 4.

As reported on Eurogamer, a Tribes Ascend closed beta is due to kick off on November 4. You can sign up for the beta on the official Tribes Ascend site.

The info came from Cyberlink‘s interview with COO at Hi-Rez Studios, Todd Harris.

There are three ways to get in the beta. Apply on the website and wait for a code, keep an eye on the Hi-Rez Facebook and twitter pages or pre-order. That’ll give you access to the VIP Starter Kit, which includes beta access, a 33% cost saving, and some bonus VIP features. We’ll update as soon as you’re able to lay down the cash.

Todd highlights that the VIP Starter Kit won’t be a “buy one get everything pack” but “a way to get VIP status in the game which will put you in a more elite set of queues.” Players will also get a bunch of in-game gold and some form of booster. “It gives you a pretty compelling starter experience,” he says.
