Indie Game Review: Siegecraft Commander

At times genres define what you can expect from a game. However, some games will take the basics and innovate on them slightly to make something new of the genre.

Siegecraft Commander is a strategy game where you need to build a base and destroy your enemies’ own bases to take control of the map and win the level. Which sounds like many games we’ve seen before. However Siegecraft is different in that it has levels that are both turn-based and real-time; depending on what level you’re currently playing. Bases are built in a slightly different way to the norm as well. While there are resources to be found they are very minimal and not required to expand your base. And instead of simply placing a new building – you fire it out of one of your existing buildings.

An awful lot of this game requires you to shoot things, either shooting out another arm of your base to build a chain further into the map, or shooting at the nearby buildings of your opponents. You cannot really move or advance any other way, and while you can get ground and flying units – you have no control over where they head or what they attack.

The game comes with three different modes; singleplayer, multiplayer and, in a first for a game we’ve reviewed here on the station, a VR compatible mode. Singleplayer is campaign and comes with two different campaigns, one that follows a band of knights as they explore looking for treasure with mainly turn-based gameplay and a map that places you against a corrupted tribe in real-time gameplay. The former is probably the first one new players should go for, as it does include tutorials to help you learn what does what and how to build certain buildings.

This game is very creative a take on the strategy game genre. It combines both real-time and turn-based play with a unique base-building style that I’ve not seen from games of this type before. Attacking a chain halfway down becomes a legitimate strategy, as destruction there leads to all further buildings built out from it also being destroyed as its ‘lifeline’ gets cut. It’s very hard to do, but it certainly works.

But oh, for a game where aiming and shooting is the main game mechanic I do wish it was easier to aim. The tutorial doesn’t entirely make it clear how you properly aim and it took me a little trial and error before I finally got it down. The fact that there was no camera rotation also sometimes makes aiming a little weird as well as meaning sometimes you can’t see things that are hidden before the 3D environment of the maps you play on.

Siegecraft Commander is a very well put together game that plays with the basics and tries hard to do something fresh and interesting. It’s priced at £14.99 for the UK and $19.99 for the US, and if you’re looking for a different strategy game, this might be the one for you.

7/10

Strange GTA Bug Sees Car Not Turn Left

Well, Rockstar did say before that they were planning to bring some of the most popular cars back into GTA Online and now the Infernus has officially entered. Only for some reason it can’t seem to turn left.

Costing $915,000 players have been snapping it up and taking it for a spin only to find that it vibrates like hell, and while taking right turns is fine, the Infernus really does not like turning left at speed. At all. If you try it spins out for some reason, and it seems the issue is down to one of the rear wheels. More specifically it’s down to the wheel’s damage value which seems to be permanently stuck on a certain damaged value, which is a very odd little bug. There is a player-available solution to fix the turning ability though and it’s to break the other rear wheel too. Which doesn’t sound that great but at least it means you can expect similar levels of skid in both directions that way, and it’s probably more exciting to drive that way too.

Rockstar are aware of the issues and are seeking the fix as we speak so hopefully the Infernus will soon live up to its fan favourite legacy.

#EGXRezzed: Dean Hall and Stationeers

One of the things that was revealed this weekend at EGX Rezzed was the new game from Rocketwerkz, and today Dean Hall took to the stage to talk about it.

Stationeers will be a space station-building and management game, which can be played singleplayer or with other people cooperatively. Although it’s currently not out for people to buy, Hall did note that they are planning to bring it to Steam Early Access in the near future (“two to three months from now” was what was said).

The game will contain a lot of elements, including the building of the station itself before you then begin the process of adapting it for habitation. Settlers will come with traits both positive and negative to help shape gameplay and all will have needs, such as oxygen, hygiene, hunger, thirst and sanity to keep an eye on.

Hall said that the aim was for the building part to take place in stages, frames first, then layers on top – so construction should take place over time and the the growth of the station will be done over time – it will develop almost naturally and without a set order.

Servers at the moment are only able to support up to 16 people, but Rocketwerkz want to make them much larger in future and let players have their own servers with customisable options – if you don’t want something you can just toggle it off from the console screen. They are also looking to borrow the idea of ‘Realms’ from Minecraft (whose biggers modpacks were admitted to be inspiration for elements of Stationeers), so you can rent server space to save space on your machine.

While currently things like the building, basic placeholder characters and more are already in the game that was brought to try on the EGX Rezzed floor, more things were said to be coming during development – such as power, radiation, new characters, shuttles and more. Computers with logic circuits were also said to be on the schedule which will probably excite some players. Beyond that, there are also plans for Steam Workshop support and tech trees for the game. There will also be the ability to designate your station as a facility – for example a prison or tourist resort. And with the shuttles you can move from buildings in deep space to planetside and back.

Stationeers should cost around $20-$25 on Early Access release (at least this was the total Dean Hall estimated) and should spend about a year in Early Access once out. Of course, we all know plans go awry all the time so who knows really? All I do know is that Stationeers looks like a good bit of fun.

Wargaming’s April Fools Is Actually Pretty Cool

It is that day now when we all must tread carefully on the Internet. It is the day of false news stories, jokes and tall tales. However, sometimes during all that we get something kind cool.

Wargaming’s April Fools joke is one of those. They’ve added a new mode to their game World of Tanks that’ll only be available for a limited time. Just what have they added? Well, take a look.

Yes, last year they took us to the Moon – so this year they’ve taken the game a little further over to the red planet of our solar system. The terrain will be rocky red and you’ll get a chance to use your favourite tank to zip along shooting lasers under hovering UFOs, all in simulated low-gravity conditions. Sounds fun, and the trailer makes it look pretty amusing as well.

Playing the mode will get you a ‘Life on Mars’ medal, but the gamemode will only be available from now until April 3rd at 8am BST – so hurry if you want to grab it. Who knows though, there have been cases of April Fools jokes being so popular that studios have implemented revised versions into the game permanently.

And if you want them, Wargaming has actually given some tips, which are as follows:

  • Use ramps to launch the Lunar Chaffee to skip valleys and reach health power-ups.
  • Use target lock while on the move to increase firing accuracy.
  • Drive into the light (yes, we mean it) to see what comes next.

Today can be a little bit annoying for some of us, but frankly the creative jokes and the fun ones (like this one!) kind of make the day worthwhile. A little.

Journey to Un’Goro releases April 6th

So, it’s finally been announced. Hearthstone’s next big expansion, journey to Un’Goro will be releasing on April 6th – or at least that’s when they said it would be begun to be rolled out. Likely this means that it’ll go live at different times in different regions again, to stop the servers getting overloaded.

Of course, this was announced on a livestream presented by Ben Brode and Frodan and at the same time we got to see some of the new cards in action in specially made decks, including some of those not yet revealed until that point. Give that we’re so close to release, Blizzard have pretty much revealed all the cards that we’re due to receive, so here are a bunch of cards seen on stream today along with a bunch of others also released recently beforehand:

Paladin

Druid

Warrior

Hunter

Priest

Warlock

Mage

Rogue

Shaman

Neutral

And that about does it for what we can expect to see from Un’Goro. It’s certainly going to be very interesting and shake up the meta greatly. Can’t wait to see the combinations that come from some of these cards.

Now to decide what class I want to try out next…
